The average number of deaths related to excessive alcohol use increased more than 29% from 2016-17 to 2020-21, said the report, published Thursday. Drinking excessively can lead to deaths directly related to alcohol, such as alcoholic liver disease, alcohol poisoning, suicide by excessive alcohol use, crashes and falls, and fetal alcohol syndrome, among others. For the past two decades, deaths from excessive alcohol use have been increasing in the United States, the CDC said. “We know that there’s a lot of evidence about what works to prevent excessive drinking, and to reduce alcohol-related harm.
